2014 GEM Annual Board Meeting and Conference Highlights

GEM convened the 2014 Annual Board Meeting and Conference on August 13-15 at the Hilton Bayfront San Diego Hotel, San Diego. The conference was structured to engage GEM Representatives in mission-forward discussions and take action through board vote on strategic items during the board meeting; while prospective and current graduate students attended workshops, participated in a technical presentation competition, and took advantage of networking opportunities with representatives during the opening baseball game & reception, and closing speed interviewing dinner cruise.

San Diego Harbor was the setting for a relaxing dinner cruise that included a high energy speed interviewing session between prospective and current graduate students and GEM representatives.

The following voting items “passed” during the 2014 Annual Board Meeting:

  1. Approval of 2013 Board of Directors Meeting Minutes – PASSED
  2. Change to Distribution of Employer Sponsored Fellowship Funds from $1.5K to $2.5K to
    Overhead – PASSED
  3. Approval of 2014-2015 GEM Annual Budget – PASSED
  4. Approval of Fellowship Program Initiatives

– University Fellows Policy – PASSED

– Engineering Research Center Model – PASSED

– Collaborative Research Model – PASSED

  1. Approval of 2014-2015 Executive Committee Slate – PASSED

Technical Presentation Competition

Students competed for cash awards in the GEM Technical Presentation Competition, sponsored by Carnegie Mellon University and Cornell University, by presenting their MS or PhD level research. This year’s winners by category are:
