GEM ANNOUNCES UNIQUE PARTNERSHIP WITH NSF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CENTERS TO PROVIDE GEM-STC GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS...

The GEM Program has entered into a unique partnership with seven of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF) Science and Technology Centers (STC) to offer graduate fellowships.  The GEM-STC Fellowship Program is designed to offer opportunities for underrepresented students to obtain M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in engineering and the natural and physical sciences.

All Science and Technology Centers share a common mission which is to provide a highly integrated, interdisciplinary, multi-institutional research infrastructure for faculty and graduate students in science and engineering.  Participating STCs span at least a dozen traditional science and engineering disciplines and represent the nation’s most elite interdisciplinary research training grounds.  Thematic research areas include nano and bio-technology, photonics, water purification, earth surface dynamics, and space weather modeling.

GEM-STC fellows with interdisciplinary, big picture scientific interests will find a direct pipeline to a compelling menu of STC graduate opportunities. Fellows can choose from a number of program options preselected by NSF for their quality, rather than by simply choosing among individual universities or departments.  Each STC lead institution is typically partnered with 2 – 9 other universities.  Therefore, prospective students can choose from 41 universities within this consortium of seven diverse Science and Technology Centers.

Candidates for participation in the GEM-STC Fellowship Program are selected from the following underrepresented groups: African American, Mexican American, American Indian, Puerto Rican American, and other Hispanic Americans. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application.  In addition, the following requirements must be satisfied:

1. Applicant must apply through the GEM Program application process and agree to abide by GEM guidelines

2. Applicant must apply and be admitted to an institution's graduate program and specific discipline
