In an interview with GEM Alumnus, Kelvin Hawkins, Vice President IBM Power Systems development, he spoke to us about the benefits of having an advance degree:

When asked why he pursued an advanced degree?
He said, “Receiving an advance degree would differentiate me from my peers in terms of getting a job and performing in my job. I loved the topics and classes offered at the graduate level. Georgia Tech was a great engineering school”.

2009 Year In Review Text

2009 was a great year! We strategically scaled back our annual conference to a virtual board meeting given economic conditions. But this streamlined approach did not stop us from seeing many of you out in the field at diversity national conferences and at GEM’s signature program, GRAD Lab (Getting Ready for Advanced Degree Laboratory). And how can we forget we moved into our permanent home in Alexandria, Virginia. Thanks to all of you who were able to attend the building dedication!  View the 2009 Year In Review Slideshow!

Hispanic Scholarship FundIn the 4th Quarter of 2009 The National GEM Consortium and Hispanic College Fund, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to promote graduate and career education in engineering and science to a larger audience and to advance the achievement of the mission of each organization. The Hispanic College Fund will encourage 50 of their scholars to apply to the GEM Fellowship. We will also work to match 20 GEM Fellows with HCF Scholars to serve as mentors to encourage them to complete the undergraduate program and go on to an advance degree. HCF Students will participate in our GEM summer webinars series to get information on the GEM Fellowship.

eGEMNew & Improved - eGEM!

Have you logged into eGEM yet? If not, join your University colleagues in accessing over 1,000 under-represented STEM applicants who wish to pursue graduate school. Many GEM University representatives are using the GEM database to offer application waivers, admission offers and funding assistantships outside of the GEM Fellowship program. We would like to thank Dr. Lindvall and Dr. Stith for their active use of eGEM as well as their constructive criticisms and compliments as we continue to work to develop the system to meet the return on investment of our University members.  Dr. Lindvall indicated "Northwestern's underrepresented minority application pool is up 35% over last year, and the eGEM list of students is one big reason for our success."

Leverage your GEM membership, log into eGEM today!  Simply go to www.gemfellowship.org, click on Login to eGEM, sign in with your email and password, then click on ‘Verify Applicant’ to tell us if the student(s) listed have applied, not applied or if they’ve been accepted.

As applicants are confirmed by GEM Employers, and the applicant indicates he/she plans to attend your University, we will send you a "GEM University Confirmation Form" to confirm that (1) you are willing to sponsor the applicant per the GEM University agreement, and (2) the applicant has indeed been accepted into one of your STEM graduate departments. Applicants are not confirmed as GEM Fellows until both the GEM Employer and the GEM University have confirmed sponsorship. We will announce all 2010 fellow recipients once they all have been confirmed by April.

If you have questions about this process please contact us at 703-562-3646 or email info@gemfellowship.org.
