Have you answered the
call to help others as you have been helped?
The GEM Alumni offers an opportunity to strengthen the Consortium
that allowed us to earn advanced degrees in Engineering and Science.
By funding PhD fellowships, alumni can build the engineering
workforce of the future. Imagine, the GEM Alumni are over 3,000
strong and are becoming the third pillar of GEM, along with the
Employer and University members.
Please join your GEM Alumni and contribute to our goal of growing
the number of PhD fellowships annually and ensuring that our mission
is realized.

3M In the Forefront of
Diversity recruiting Efforts
Last
month Michele Lezama and Anna Lopez had a very successful employer
visit at the 3M headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Gene
Washington, GEM's 2006 Employer Member of the year and staffing
manager of 3M led the meeting which was hosted by Executive
President, of Research & Development and CTO, Fred Palensky. 3M has
been a member of the organization since 1977 and has sponsored over
100 fellows. We want to thank 3M for their support through the years
and taking a leadership role in enhancing diversity efforts in STEM
education and the advancement of the GEM fellows they have funded.
The GEM alum at 3M shared their experience as GEM fellows and how
GEM's partnership with 3M was a determining factor in their success
in obtaining a graduate degree in science and engineering.

GEM & GRAD Lab Receive
Enthusiastic Response Across the Country
GEM took its highly
sought after graduate programming, GRAD Lab (Getting Ready for
Advance Degree Laboratory) and Informational Sessions, on the road
again during the collegiate recruitment season. This time the
programs were featured at the Boston University, University of
Maryland - Baltimore County (UMBC), Northwestern University, AISES
National Conference, SHPE National Conference, SACNAS National
Conference, Alabama State University, University of Michigan - Ann
Arbor, and many other venues around the United States. GEM was
definitely busy during this recruitment time!
GEM traveled September through October and conducted
graduate programming to fulfill its mission which is: "To enhance
the value of the nation's human capital by increasing the
participation of underrepresented groups (African Americans,
Native Americans, and Hispanic Americans) at the master's and
doctoral levels in engineering and science." The questions GEM seeks
to answer at all its programming are: Why students should attend
graduate school, How to apply to a graduate program, and How to
locate funding. Additionally, students find strategies to obtain
STRONG Recommendations letters from faculty as well as write
relevant Statement of Purposes.

Welcome Gem's New
Recruiter
Please
welcome to the GEM staff Jacqueline Thomas, Recruiter. Ms.
Thomas earned her BA in Psychology at Long Island University in New
York. As a native of Panama she joins GEM as a national recruiter
with a focus on developing opportunities for the Latino community in
engineering and science at the graduate level. Thomas has extensive
experience working in latino civil rights and educational
organizations that include Latin American Association, the Mexican
American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), and the
Hispanic Scholarship Fund.
