Call for Nominations for the GEM Executive Committee

Four positions on the GEM Executive Committee are currently open for nominations: President, Executive Vice President, Vice President, Strategy and Policy, University and Treasurer. A call for nominations went out in late January.  If you know of an executive who is employed with, or a retiree of a GEM Employer or University, please submit his/her bio with a brief cover letter to nominations@gemfellowship.org by February 16, 2007.  The GEM Executive Committee will vote on nominations in early March.  The new GEM Executive Committee will be posted on the GEM website in mid-March.

2007 GEM Fellowship Selection Status

Several GEM Employers have confirmed they will identify 10 or more 2007 summer interns via the GEM Fellowship program: HP, IBM, Intel, Johnson & Johnson, Lexmark, Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, and Southwest Research Institute! Why not identify your 2007 engineering and science interns via the GEM Fellowship database?  Sponsoring students via GEM gives you top notch interns and it also provides deserving students with funding to obtain their masters or doctoral graduate degrees.  Contact us if you wish to sign-up with GEM, or increase your commitment, to sponsor students to go to graduate school and identify the most qualified 2007 summer interns.

The deadline to confirm GEM Fellowship applicants was January 31, 2007. First round announcements of GEM Employer sponsorship went out to applicants on February 1st. The GEM office will spend the next two weeks reassigning applicants for GEM Employers' consideration for second round confirmations. Post January 31st, please be aware that GEM Employers no longer have exclusive access to applicants. Please contact us to confirm your fellows, as soon as possible.

New University Confirmation Form

Attention GEM University Members: 2007 applicants who have been notified of GEM Employer sponsorship will be requesting your signature on a new form to confirm that you are accepting them into your institution as a GEM fellow.  GEM needs to have this form on file to verify your institution's financial support of each fellow you admit into your program.  If you have questions about this new process please contact Michele Lezama at mlezama@gemfellowship.org.

Who do I call?

As GEM moves from South Bend, Indiana to Washington, D.C. we have several employee transitions that will happen in the immediate future.  Rest assured that we are working together as a team and are committed to providing exceptional customer service while we move, just like we have for the last 30 years!

In an effort to ensure that your e-mails and phone calls are received during this transition, we have developed a table to help determine who you should contact for various situations.

GRAD Labs A huge success

GEM started a new program that offers under-represented students exposure to the benefits of research and technology careers in a highly interactive one-day event called GRAD Lab, Getting Ready for Advanced Degrees Laboratory.  GRAD Lab was launched at our 30th anniversary conference this past June in Chicago to outstanding participant reviews.  Since then, GEM has been traveling throughout the country hosting GRAD Lab events including past and upcoming GRAD Labs at SHPE, AISES, and NSBE conferences!  Thank you for responding to the call to host this worthwhile event and we welcome further interest in hosting a GRAD Lab in your area.
