Thanks to the 2008 GEM Selection Committee
Fourteen
prestigious representatives of GEM Universities, Employers, Alumni
and Strategic Partners volunteered their efforts to review close to
700 applications to determine which applicants would be sent to GEM
Employers for their consideration to provide internships and sponsor
to attend graduate school. This effort is a month long process of
reading extensive applications, culminating with a peer review at
GEM's office in Washington DC. Please join me in thanking these
members for their significant volunteer work in providing graduate
access opportunities to the next generation of scientist and
engineers:

Attention GEM Employers,
We Need Your Help!
Over
the next two weeks the Fellowship Administration department of GEM
will continue in high gear while we engage in the core GEM process:
linking applicants with GEM Employers. As a GEM Employer you should
have received a set of applications, inclusive of resumes for your
exclusive review. We request that you aggressively review these
resumes to determine by February 8th who you would like to sponsor
as a 2008 GEM Fellow.
If you are a GEM employer and need assistance meeting this deadline,
please contact the GEM office as soon as possible at 202-457-8672 or
send an e-mail to
info@gemfellowship.org.
GEM Member Universities -
Are You Recruiting GEM Applicants?
As
a GEM University Member you should have received a database of over
400 applicants that are currently under review by GEM Employers.
Please send these applicants literature from your graduate programs
with a cover letter from you, the GEM University Rep, encouraging
them to come to your University. Please do not indicate that these
applicants are GEM Fellows! Approximately 50% of these applicants
will become GEM Fellows, however 100% of them are graduate eligible!
We hope you will use this list to ACTIVELY recruit very qualified
under-represented talent, to inform them of your programs, and offer
additional financial opportunities available via your departments.
How will we know who has been awarded a 2008 GEM Fellowship?
As applicants are confirmed by GEM Employers, and the applicant
indicates he/she plans to attend your University, we will send you a
"GEM University Confirmation Form" to confirm that (1) you are
willing to sponsor the applicant per the GEM University agreement,
and (2) the applicant has indeed been accepted into one of your STEM
graduate departments. Applicants are not confirmed as GEM Fellows
until both the GEM Employer and the GEM University have confirmed
sponsorship. We will send you a list of all confirmed 2008 GEM
Fellows on or around April 1st.
Increase the number of under-represented students in your graduate
STEM departments, recruit a GEM applicant today!
If you have questions about this process please contact us at
202-457-8672 or
info@gemfellowship.org.
GRAD lab held at SHPE
Graduate Institute
Thirty
undergraduate students interested in advanced degrees participated
in the GEM's Getting Ready for Advanced Degrees (GRAD) Lab, held at
the 2007 SHPE Graduate Institute. In addition to providing a GRE
practice exam and test taking strategies, it also featured vital
information on all aspects of the graduate school application
process, such as funding, mentoring, access and school choice. The
program better prepared participants to interact with college
recruiters from more than 40 universities.
