Graduates...GEM Certificates are
here!
You may have graduated
December 2005 or 1995 but if you did not forward a final
transcript you will not receive a GEM
Certificate of Completion. On attractive heavy
weight stock and updated with GEM's new logo a
certificate honors the completion of your
GEM-funded advanced degree. So confirm your
graduation via a final transcript. It only takes a
few minutes to update your
profile and complete a brief survey of your
GEM experience. In return you will receive a
lasting recognition to display next to your
diploma. Soon-to-be graduate? Put a
final transcript to GEM on your "to-do"

Former GEM Presidents to
Moderate Conference
Forums
Kurt Landgraf, CEO of
Educational Testing Services, and John A. White,
PhD, Chancellor of the University of Arkansas, will
moderate key forums addressing solving the "Quiet
Crisis" in graduate STEM degree attainment Thursday,
June 29.
Landgraf will moderate the
Technology Officer Forum, scheduled for 10:30 am to
Noon. He served as president of
GEM 2002-2003.
White will direct
discussion during the University Officer Forum from
1:30-3:00 pm. He was president of GEM from
1993-1995.
During these forums, and throughout
the conference experience, thought leaders from
industry, academia, and government will focus on
how stakeholders
can best direct human and capital resources to resolve a
problem of increasing urgency—the Quiet Crisis in
the attainment of STEM degrees, particularly among our
nation’s native-born, historically underrepresented
ethnic groups.
The goal of “GEM @ 30: A National Imperative” is
developing GEM’s advocacy position and leadership role
in addressing this crisis as well as forming
action-oriented alliances to advance diversity in
science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM)
disciplines and careers.
Read one of the latest
articles on the Quiet Crisis by invited speaker and
President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Shirley
Ann Jackson, PhD, here . Jackson also
authored the report “The Quiet Crisis: Falling Short in
Producing American Scientific and Technical Talent,” as
chair of BEST’s (Building Engineering and Science
Talent) Blue Ribbon Panel on Higher Education. The
report, shown above, was provided at GEM's 2004
conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. |

GEM News
The Executive Committee announces
the formation of an Advisory Board, a first for the
organization.
A
result of last year's strategic planning
process, Dolores Calicchio (PSGAUS, J&J) chair
of the Organizational Capacity Committee and executive
director Michele Lezama are leading the effort to
seat a high-level
advisory board of advocates having the primary goal of assisting
in fundraising for long-term and significant increases in
the number of GEM fellowship awards made
annually.
Having a structure and purpose in
place nominees are being contacted now and
the Advisory Board will be introduced at the June anniversary conference.
GEM representatives are encouraged to forward additional names for consideration based on
the following:
-
Important criterion for advisory
board members include having significant influence in
foundation, corporate, government, or academic arenas,
and that an institution or high net-worth individuals
would give significant fellowship
support.
-
This board will be
composed of persons from diverse ethnic, gender, and
professional backgrounds.
Please submit nominees who meet the
criteria above and those you are aware would be willing
to contribute to GEM as described in the Advisory Board
forwarded to members earlier this year to Dolores Calicchio, at
dcalicc2@psgaus.jnj.com
and copy Michele Lezama at mlezama@nd.edu. |
