GEM Executive Committee Meeting April 29-30, 2009, sponsored by Corning Inc.

The GEM Executive Committee along with Standing Chairs met this past April in Corning, NY to discuss the strategy of GEM. Several proposals were analyzed in detail for consideration to present at GEM's next Annual Board Meeting, tentatively scheduled for October 28, 2009 at Noon Eastern (mark your calendar!) as a comprehensive webinar with a physical meeting in Washington, D.C. for those who are already planning to be in DC. Proposals under discussion were new models that would allow for streamlined University payments, University sponsorship and development of research based skills of GEM applicants.

English or Spanish, GEM covers both NSBE and SHPE

Prowl and growl, go Clemson Tigers! The NSBE chapter at Clemson hosted GEM for one of their membership meetings in March. "Show me the money", they said. Jacqueline Thomas shared ways to find funding for graduate school, as well as how to apply for the GEM fellowship. Students also heard from four of our fellows who shared their internship experience at Lexmark.

Standing room only: the SHPE chapter of Georgia Tech did not want to be left behind, so they invited Ms. Jacqueline Thomas, in March, to speak at their membership meeting on the GEM fellowship, as well as how to find money for graduate school. Go Yellow Jackets!

Final four in North Carolina: GEM was there, not for the games, but to share the word that through GEM you too can be a champion. Jacqueline Thomas was the presenter at the SHPE Regional Leadership Conference, speaking to students about the importance of graduate school and finding funding for it. This was a great opportunity as GEM was able to share with one of their employer members, IBM, who was a sponsor of the event as well as from Andrew Pita, one of the GEM fellows and current president of SHPE Region 7 chair. Not only does GEM deliver excellent education opportunity, funding and employment opportunity we deliver champions. Great job University of North Carolina!

GEM traveled west again! Jacqueline Thomas was invited to speak at the annual UC Graduate Fellowship Advisors Consortium at UC Davis. This gave GEM another opportunity to share information with other UC universities about the GEM program and the benefits of being a member. She also presented to students information about the GEM fellowship program, and how and when to apply.

She then traveled to Los Angeles to be a part of the USC Center for Engineering and Diversity Awards Banquet where several of our GEM fellows received awards and recognitions. GEM was recognized by Northrop Grumman as a partner and a good way for students to gain internship experience with a great company. Students were encouraged to apply in July.
