More GEM Events

GEM is Honored at Aerospace Corporation

In our August newsletter we featured a number of GEM Member Employers who hosted GEM for site visits this summer. We had one last visit at the Aerospace Corporation in early August. Karolyn Young, GEM Alumni Association's current Vice President, along with GEM Rep Elaine Harrell hosted Aerospace employees including current GEM interns from both their Virginia and California locations, GEM Alumni employed at Aerospace and a number of key executives and hiring managers to reengage the audience on the importance of the GEM relationship. The Aerospace GEM luncheon was a huge success and we hope to encourage other GEM Employers to host similar events at their worksite to ensure the sustainability and overwhelming success of GEM. Karolyn Young will present the GEM Alumni Ambassador program at the GEM Conference in Las Vegas, where you can learn more details on this program.

New Fellowship Administration Manager

GEM has hired a new employee to run our Fellowship Administration department.  Please send a hello to Arnold Madison Kee via akee@gemfellowship.org to welcome him to the team and to ask any process questions you may have.  He can also be reached at phone number 202-457-8688.

Arnold Kee comes to GEM from the Institute for Higher Education Policy where he served as Managing Director of Programs. In that position he studied the efforts of minority serving institutions who have been successfully enrolling and graduating students in STEM. He brings knowledge of those efforts and a network of STEM-related contacts. In addition, he has worked for over a decade in the non-profit educational community and has the potential to link GEMs efforts with community colleges, MSIs, associations, other four-year institutions, and funders who share our mission. He is a graduate of Tufts University with a B.A. in political science. He lives in Bowie, Maryland with his wife and two young sons.

GEM Fellowship Application is now Open

The 2008 GEM Fellowship Application open on July 1, 2007. We have already received over 100 applicants. If you are a GEM University Representative please log into the system to start recruiting! You should have also received an e-mail to ask your contact in the undergraduate engineering and science department to forward 10 names and e-mails of your top performing students. Please help us reach out to students to encourage them to attend graduate school.

University Payments

Have your received stipend and university support payments for all of your GEM fellows currently matriculating on your campus? If not, please submit your payment form (insert link to the download section) today to info@gemfellowship.org

Psychometrics

Morgan State University, Maryland's Public Urban University, has recognized the need for increasing the number of well-trained professionals in the field of testing and is establishing a graduate program in Psychometrics that will start this fall.

Today, educational and psychological testing is playing a larger and more important role in our lives than ever before.

There is broader and more intensive testing of students in grades K-12 because of the Federal No Child Left Behind law. There are also entry tests into college and graduate school, professional tests to become, for example, a physician or lawyer, certification tests to become a plumber or certified financial planner, and psychological tests to assess ability, attitudes and interests, to name but a few.
