“Welcome to Florida” Opening Session

Sponsored by MIT Lincoln Laboratory, University of South Florida and University of Florida

During the opening session, participants will hear a welcome address from our Board of Director’s President, Dr. Eric Evans, Director of MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and from senior leaders from member schools in the state of Florida. Meet the GEM Executive Committee, receive an overview of the outstanding events, business sessions, and networking opportunities we have planned for our two days together, followed by sponsor vignettes.

Opening Reception Cruise

Immediately after the formal opening session, we will be escorted directly across the street from the Eden Roc Hotel to board a yacht for the “Welcome to Florida” Opening Reception Cruise along the Miami Beach Inner Harbor. White beach casual attire is appropriate. (Pre-order your GEM white polo shirt! Students who are registered for the full conference will receive a free shirt to wear on Wednesday evening.)

A State of the Society overview will be given from the GEM Executive Committee, followed by a sponsor keynote presentation.

Workshop and Competition Block I

Informational workshops will be presented for University and Employer Reps, while undergraduates, graduate students, and GEM Alumni will participate in development workshops throughout each workshop block. Students will also compete in a Technical Presentation Competition and/or Poster Session where students will present findings from research accomplished during their summer internship or graduate research. A panel of faculty and industry technical leaders will choose the Fellows with the top presentations to move on to the finals.

Representatives from GEM Member Universities will network with student attendees to highlight their STEM graduate and post-doc opportunities.

Silent Auction Pre-Reception

Attendees will gather prior to the Black Tie Gala for networking, light hors d’ourvres, and participation in a silent auction, with proceeds to benefit the GEM Fellowship Program.


Gala Dinner

GEM is celebrating 40 years of advocating for talented, underrepresented minorities who earned graduate degrees in engineering and applied science. The Gala will showcase the amazing accomplishments of GEM Alumni and the institutional members who have contributed to GEM student’s success. The gala will showcase a “who’s who” of STEM leaders and awardees. Seating will begin at 6:15pm.

Technical Presentation Competition Finals

Sponsored by Carnegie Mellon University

Before we officially call the annual board meeting to order, GEM Employer and University Representative will judge the oral component of the finalists in the technical presentation competition in both the master’s and PhD categories. Finalist will receive awards immediately following the close of the board of directors meeting.

GEM Annual Board of Directors Meeting

Representatives from GEM’s 130+ membership institutions (from both employers and universities) will vote on strategic items to advance the mission of the Consortium.

  • While representatives participate in the Board of Directors meeting, students and alumni will attend workshops.


Award Announcements

We will announce the winners of the technical presentation competition, poster session, and announce golf tournament award winners.
