Founded in 1976 at the University of Notre Dame, we have operated quietly and steadily to graduate close to 4,000 researchers, professors, entrepreneurs, inventors, and business leaders, including over 300 men and women with doctorates in the physical sciences, life sciences, and engineering.
The mission of The National GEM Consortium is to enhance the value of the nation’s human capital by increasing the participation of underrepresented groups (African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans) at the master’s and doctoral levels in engineering and science.
GEM’s fellowship programs span the entire recruitment, retention, and professional development spectrum. GEM’s principal activity is the provision of graduate fellowships at the MS and Ph.D. levels coupled with paid summer internships. GEM is devoted to increasing access and success in engineering and science graduate education and practice.
GEM offers best in class programming to encourage under-represented students who are thinking about pursing a STEM graduate program, current graduate students to ensure successful graduation, and networking opportunities for technical professionals who have gone through the GEM programming.
The GEM Board of Directors (representatives from member institutions) meets once a year for a formal meeting to vote on the forward strategies of the organization. University and Employer Representatives convene for a day and a half of workshops and student recruiting events before the formal roll call. Traditional events held at the annual conference include General Sessions, Workshops, On site Intervieiwing, and our Annual GEM Technical Presentation Competition.
The year 2016 was special, not just because it was hosted on South Beach, but also because GEM celebrated 40 years of advocating for talented, underrepresented minorities who are earning graduate degrees in engineering and applied science. The annual conference is the highlight of each year bringing America’s thought leaders, academia and industry together to sharpen skills, collaborate and celebrate the achievements of GEM Fellows and GEM Alumni. Or simply put by GEM’s motto, “Linking Exceptional Talent to Extraordinary Careers.”
